Parenting

What are the different modes of parenting?

Let us now have look at the various conventional modes of parenting.

• One of the models is “Rules of traffic” through which the parents just lay down some behavioral rules. Some parents just tell their children as to how they should behave without explaining them the various pros and cons. Instead of telling a child not to steal, he or she should be explained the bad effects of stealing. Here, they just try to teach the child the right thing.

• Another model is the “Fine gardening model” According to some parents every child has both good and bad qualities. The parents are busy finding faults in their children instead of appreciating their current achievements. This finding fault sometimes carries on throughout ones life. As per S.Soloveychik both these models are very dangerous. Though our motive is to make the child follow the correct path we end up destroying our relationship with our children. We are constantly fighting with our children instead of just weeding out the bad quality.

• Let us talk about the “Reward and punishment model”. As it is based on logic it is quite popular. A child is rewarded for his/her good action and punished for a bad one. It is also easy to teach the child through this logical method. If this method is adopted constantly then the sense of justice is formed easily in the child’s mind. According to S.Soloveychik this sometimes proves dangerous for the child’s future, as he/she may not get this form of justice in real life.
